Dear Martha Stewart

Back in my grad school days, I would come home for lunch to have a bit of a reprieve from the craziness. I usually watched the Martha Stewart show...can't really tell you why, maybe because it was good mindless entertainment at the time. I don't know that I would choose to watch it now. Anyhoo...

On one show, she said that if you burn a candle while you are chopping onions, the onions won't make you cry. Since I had lots of onions to chop tonight, I thought I would test it out...

Dear Martha Stewart, Maybe I need a bigger candle, or a different kind of fire because it didn't work...

*This pic was taken AFTER I could see enough to walk down the steps and retrieve the camera...there was one point that I was crying so much I completely soaked the left sleeve of my shirt trying to dry it up so I could see where I was going. Ignore the "sad eyes." Apparently they're the same as the "Oh my gosh my eyeballs are burning out of their sockets" eyes.

I'd never heard that a candle would help. I have heard that it helps if the onion or the knife is cold. And sticking your head in the freezer is a nice reprieve from the "oh my gosh my eyeballs are burning out of their sockets" feeling. And why were you chopping that many onions?!?

I haven't heard the candle thing either, but what works for me is, when I make the first couple of large chops (like in half or quarters) I run the onions under cold water then chop away and don't have any trouble. If I don't do this, I get the terrible burning eyeball syndrome! Hope this helps!

Usually i would put them in the fridge for 30minutes before i need them and the result is...tears no more :)

I have heard that if you turn the faucet on and water is running it will prevent your eyes from running, stinging, etc. You can also wear eyeglasses or sunglasses as that supposedly helps. I too had not heard about a candle burning as a way to deter that. Good luck and btw, Happy Valentines Day. Cyn
