Blogworthy

My patients absolutely crack me up. All during the day I think to myself, "that's blogworthy" (of course in a very HIPAA sort of way), but I never remember anything to blog about when I get home. Usually because I'm too distracted with cooking dinner, finishing my notes and working out once I actually do get home. And today I'm home early. And the one thing I can actually think to blog about is definitely NOT appropriate for the blog. Hilarious at the time? Yes. Definitely NOT appropriate to share with a random audience.

So, I'll try really hard to keep a notebook in my scrub pocket and write down my funny snippets during the day for the rest of this week. Then maybe I'll have enough blogworthiness to share so you can see a little bit of why I love what I do.

I was driving down the road today (through "downtown" in a VERY small town), and I saw one of my patient's walking from the Dollar Store parking lot back towards her house. Her "Cadillac" walker (that's one with 4 wheels, brakes, seat, basket, etc...know what I'm talking about?) was LOADED down with Dollar Store bags, and she was hoofing it back home. (It's about a 100 yard walk, fyi). And I thought to myself, "Now THAT'S success."

And I laughed. Because my definition of success has SO changed since becoming a home health therapist. But I think it's for the better. I appreciate all the little things so much more now. Things like being able to walk out to the mailbox by myself, being able to take my trash out, being able to stand up long enough to fix myself a sandwich, being able to shower and be ready to leave the house in 45 minutes instead of 4 hours, not being so short of breath on the days I shower that I can't do anything else until tomorrow, going outside without having to call a family member to come sit with me in case my blood pressure drops or I get too short of breath to make it back in. It really is the little things in life that matter. Things that are so ordinary and mundane to me are monumental successes to my patients. And I totally love that.
